I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s and my parents listened to a lot of Ray Stevens. That meant *I* listened to a lot of Ray Stevens. I know the words to a fair amount of Ray Stevens songs. And CCR but that’s another post…

I never understood this lyric though? I never saw a pastor wear a rolex before. And then I did. And I didn’t know what to think about it.

Preachers n sneakers is big and based on pastors wearing expensive shoes but if you spend any time over at @prophetsnwatches ; shoes cost nothing compared to watches. Fractions on the dollar.

So let’s ask the question that’s obviously coming; is it sin for a pastor to wear a luxury watch?

I don’t think it’s that easy? Like a lot of things, just doing or not doing a thing isn’t the problem; it’s the heart. I don’t think this is the right question then. A better question would be “It’s permissible but is it profitable?”

What’s the heart in wearing that watch? Because it’s making a statement and the statement is interpreted differently by different people.

But here’s the uno reverse in this conundrum; it’s possible that we elevate ourselves higher in this equation and look down on those who wear rolexes thus placing ourselves in greater error. Piety isn’t listed with the fruit of the spirit so possessing it is not a great sign.

I’m all for asking the question; because we all spend money on things that are completely ridiculous to other people and sometimes it’s stupid. But personally I need to be careful to not lift myself up while I take others down.

Soooooo, if I pastored a church, would I personally wear a rolex? I’m not into watches so my answer is an easy NO. I think it’s more problematic than profitable and the amount of available reasons to justify it are few. 🤷🏻‍♂️ But what do you think? Is personal and opulent luxury ok in the modern church?

NOTE: This song is from the 80’s so but i think it’s still pretty relevant. I thought about changing ‘television’ to livestream or something like that but I don’t think we’re that far removed from the televangelists yet… 😅
