Christians supporting a candidate is one thing.

Christians demanding unquestioned loyalty to a candidate, measuring other Christians’ faith by their fidelity to that candidate, and calling that candidate “God’s chosen one,” no matter how unlike Christ they are, that’s idolatry.

When I first thought of drawing this quote I was planning on leaving the “Christians supporting a candidate is one thing” part out - mostly opting for something terse because…well…I’ve found if a quote is too long people don’t stick around to read it. Totally get it because I can be the same way.

It’s important I left it in though because it really emphasizes the point I want to make here:

Very smart, faithful, and well-meaning Christians are going to vote in ways you don’t agree with. Both ways.

I’ve seen the argument from both sides that if you don’t vote a certain way; you’re not only trying to destroy the U.S.; you can’t actually consider yourself a Christian and that’s a bridge too far.

Vote how you want, make your case that one side is better than the other, develop thoughtful and engaging reasons why your candidate is better, but don’t turn someones faith against them based on how they vote.

We’re all doing the best we can with the information we have at the time we have it. It’s possible the other side has information or perspective that would be valuable for us to hear but we can’t hear it if we’re shouting our condemnation at them instead.
