I’ve had this video in the queue for a while and I finally listened to it. Honestly, I don’t know if I can write a good caption for it. I’ll link to it in my stories and if you have 12 minutes I highly recommend it. I love listening to Justin speak; it’s challenging for sure.
Social media today wants us to fight with each other. It’s not a secret, anger is the emotion that drives engagement. The angrier we are, the more content we add to these platforms the more money they make. They quickest path to anger that I’ve found is the need to be right. When we engage, it’s not a mutual search for the truth. It’s not a exchange of ideas or an acknowledgment of nuance; it’s a battle where falsehoods, intellectual dishonesty, pretext, conflation, overly broad arguments, straw men and the like (I stole that list from the speech) are tools that serve our ego and not the truth. And if we’re not serving the truth, are we really serving Jesus?
Topics like race theory, marxism, social justice, white nationalism, etc get thrown around using binary allegiances. It’s frustrating that we can choose between *hundreds* of types of spaghetti sauce to have for dinner but when it comes to dealing with issues surrounding race we have two. You are on this side or that and because we are too lazy to research the topics and address the lies and the truths we just have to pick a side and defend it despite the lies being told to serve it. There’s got to be a better way forward than that.
